Leave your kennel coat on the peg and your boots by the door; this is a kennels tour you can make from your armchair. You'll experience the icy yards of winter and the summer heat of the puppy show; you'll be there in the small hours as a bitch whelps and up at dawn to exercise hounds. With this DVD you share the lives of three professional huntsmen.

Meet your hosts: - Richard Lloyd went into hunt service from school. He spent 15 seasons learning the ‘old ways’ in foxhound and harrier kennels. He's been at the Pendle Forest & Craven Harriers for the last 21 seasons; James Pound at the Newcastle & District Beagles served in buck hounds and foxhound kennels before becoming the professional huntsmen at two packs of beagles and Simon Dunn, your third host, took over the Chilmark & Clifton Foot Beagles from James. It's Simon's first job in charge, he brought with him experience of stag hounds and foxhound kennels.

‘In Kennels’ is aimed at anyone interested in looking after hounds. It's ‘hands-on’ and shows the hard and dirty work in kennels as well as the rewards! It also reveals the attitude each huntsman brings to his job. “Hounds come first in my life, and that's the way it should be,” says Richard Lloyd. You'll learn it's through kindness that order is maintained in kennels, “They should want to come with you,” says Simon Dunn.

The DVD has been produced by the Association of Masters of Harriers and Beagles, the aim is to spread good practice amongst their member packs. Once you’ve been introduced to the three Kennels the viewer is guided through seven separate topics:-

• Morning Routine: It's 6-30, the start of a Kennel's day. We see hounds feed, and examine how they are kennelled.
• Yards and Beds need attention later in the day. And there's a secret glimpse of one young hound's behaviour when no one is watching.
• Wintertime: It's the height of the hunting season; now's the time to start puppies on couples.
• Whelping: Join the night-watch as Marvel whelps, and follow the care our huntsmen take as the pups grow.
• Biking Out: A new season approaches and hounds need to get fit. Our three packs meet the hazards – cats, dogs and traffic – outside the Kennel gates.
• Top Dog: Who's in charge? Our huntsmen describe how they become the leader of the pack at their kennels.
•  Handling Hounds: We follow the progress of one young bitch. Will she be confident enough to stand for the judges at the Puppy Show?

These stories have been brought to you through the generosity of the Aldenham Harriers. When their kennels closed they donated money to educate the next generation of hound enthusiasts. Ex-master Derek Christopher saw the DVD, “It will fascinate anyone interested in what happens behind the gates of their local harrier and beagle kennels.”
